Catholic Charities North Dakota is committed to strengthening communities by investing in the next generation of social workers. Through the Hassing Social Work Scholarship, we support students who are dedicated to serving others and addressing the unique needs of individuals and families across our state, especially in rural communities.

Hassing Social Work Scholarship
Catholic Charities North Dakota proudly offers two Hassing Social Work Scholarships of $1,000 each year to students pursuing a Bachelor of Social Work degree.
Scholarship Objectives
The Hassing Scholarship was established to:
- Draw attention to the unmet social service needs of rural North Dakota
- Ensure that Christian values are present within the social welfare system in North Dakota
- Honor Will and Mabel Hassing, who lived in rural North Dakota and were deeply committed to both Christian values and social service
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be in the process of completing their junior year
- Be formally accepted and enrolled in a School of Social Work to earn a Bachelor of Social Work degree
- Attend school full time during the scholarship period
- Demonstrate promise in the field through:
- Involvement in professional or service activities
- Academic achievement sufficient to earn a BSW
- Intent to practice social services in North Dakota
- Have resided in North Dakota for at least four years
- Demonstrate understanding and acceptance of Catholic moral teaching
If a recipient leaves school before completing the specified academic term, they are required to repay the prorated portion of the tuition and book reimbursement.
Application Process
To apply for the Hassing Social Work Scholarship:
- Complete the scholarship application form.
- Submit three letters of reference. At least two references must be from outside the school setting, such as clergy, a current or former employer, or a community member.
The application form becomes available on August 1 each year. The deadline to apply is October 15 for the upcoming academic year.
The Catholic Charities North Dakota Board of Directors reviews all applications and makes selections at the November Board meeting. Applicants are notified in December. Scholarship payments are sent directly to the college or university in January for the upcoming academic semester.

Internship Opportunities
Catholic Charities North Dakota also partners with colleges and universities to provide internship opportunities for students pursuing careers in social work and related fields. Interns gain hands-on experience, professional mentorship, and the opportunity to serve individuals and families throughout North Dakota.
