When you need pregnancy and parenting support, it's important to reach out. Learn more about why you should reach out and how an adoption center can help you.

Navigating the journey of pregnancy and parenting can be both magical and overwhelming. Whether it's your first child or you're expanding your family, ensuring you have the right support system is essential. Reaching out for help can make this life-changing experience more rewarding and less stressful. Here are several compelling reasons to seek pregnancy and parenting support.

          1. Improving Emotional Well-Being Through Support

First, having access to expert and community support can significantly improve your mental health and well-being. Pregnancy is a time of immense change, and having a professional to talk to can provide emotional stability. Not only can they offer advice and reassurance, but they can also help alleviate anxieties and build confidence in your parenting abilities. In extending your network, you'll find comfort among others facing similar challenges, and even organizations like an adoption center can provide additional guidance and emotional resources for growing families.

          2. Accessing Resources and Exploring Family Options

Second, understanding and utilizing resources can help you make informed decisions about your child’s upbringing. Parenting support services offer valuable insights into child development, which can be crucial as your child grows. Moreover, with over 391,000 children living in the U.S. foster care system according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, there is an increasing need for fostering and adoption awareness. Connecting with an adoption center can open doors to meaningful opportunities while also helping you learn more about the process and available support systems. Reaching out to these services not only helps in nurturing your child effectively but also provides the option of giving more children a chance at a loving family.

          3. Building Stronger Family Relationships

Lastly, establishing healthier family dynamics is a key benefit of seeking parenting support. Specialists can guide you in creating a nurturing home environment, fostering strong communication and positive relationships within the family. Support services, including those offered through an adoption center, also assist in adjusting to new roles as parents or siblings, thereby reducing stress and conflict within the household. Building these vital skills early can lead to a lasting positive impact on your family's emotional and relational health.

Seeking out pregnancy and parenting support is a constructive step toward a healthier and more fulfilling parenting experience. By leveraging available resources, such as guidance from an

Honoring Deb Black, 2026 Fargo Caritas Award Recipient

The Fargo Caritas Award Luncheon on March 17, 2026 was a joyful and inspiring celebration—one filled with gratitude, faith, and the quiet power of service lived out each day. This year, we were honored to recognize Deb Black as the 2026 Fargo Caritas Award recipient, a woman whose life beautifully reflects the heart of Catholic Charities’ mission.

The Caritas Award honors individuals who live out extraordinary compassion through humble, faithful service. As those gathered at the luncheon quickly witnessed, Deb embodies that spirit in every sense. The room was filled with warmth, laughter, and deep appreciation—not only for Deb herself, but for the countless ways her life has touched others.

          Faith in Action

A lifelong member of St. Therese the Little Flower Church, Deb’s faith has always been active and visible. She is a member of Christian Mothers and Catholic Daughters and served for several years as a high school catechist, helping young people grow in their faith.

In 2014, Deb felt a strong call to serve through the Society of St. Vincent de Paul after hearing a presentation following mass. Drawn by a deep love for serving those experiencing poverty, she became one of the founding members, and the first president, of the local SSVdP conference. In 2024, she was elected President of the Fargo District Council, where she continues to cherish the person‑to‑person home visits and the relationships built through collaboration with community partners.

Deb’s service also extends to her work as a board member of the Pierce County Food Pantry and through her involvement with Great Plains Food Bank CSFP distributions—quietly ensuring that neighbors have what they need.

“Do Small Things with Great Love”

One of the most powerful moments of the luncheon came through Deb’s words and the guiding philosophy she lives by: “Live the Little Way. Do small things with great love.”

It is a simple message but one that resonated deeply with everyone in the room. Deb reminded us that meaningful impact doesn’t always come from grand gestures, but from showing up, listening, and serving faithfully, one person, one moment at a time.

True to her humility, Deb shared that she was deeply grateful to be nominated for the Caritas Award by Father Frank Miller, and she views the honor not as recognition of herself, but as a reflection of the many faithful people she has been blessed to serve alongside.

          A Heart That Reflects Caritas

The Fargo Caritas Award Luncheon was more than a celebration. It was a reminder of the joy found in service, the strength of community, and the beauty of living with great love in small, faithful ways.

Please join us in congratulating Deb Black and celebrating a life that so clearly reflects the heart of Caritas and the mission of Catholic Charities North Dakota.

We are honored to celebrate Deb Black, the 2026 recipient of the Fargo Caritas Award, whose life reflects a quiet, steadfast commitment to serving others with humility, faith, and love. The Fargo Caritas Award Luncheon recognizes individuals who live out the mission of Catholic Charities through extraordinary service and compassion, and Deb embodies this spirit in every sense.

Deb Black grew up in the Rugby area and graduated from Rugby High School. Years later, she spoke at a parish teen-group meeting, recalling “that as a little girl, she felt God call her to serve Him through service to others.” As she grew Deb pondered this “call” as she learned about great Saints and Missionaries who served God by serving the poor and needy, She humbly wondered how she could follow in those footsteps from her life in rural North Dakota.

As life does, Deb’s life moved on. She married her husband, Mike, in 1976. They will celebrate 50 years of marriage this June. Together they raised four children and are the proud grandparents of two grandchildren. Deb and Mike spent many years ranching and later owned and operated a cabinet shop, building both a livelihood and strong roots in their community.

Deb devoted 34 years of her professional life to public service with the USDA Farm Service Agency, where she worked closely with farmers and ranchers, helping them access essential programs and resources. After her retirement, she continued her commitment to caring for others through several years of service with First Light Home Care.

A lifelong member of St. Therese the Little Flower Church, Deb has been deeply involved in parish life. She is a member of Christian Mothers and Catholic Daughters, and she served for several years as a high school catechist, helping to form young people in their faith.

In 2014, Deb felt a strong calling to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul after hearing a presentation by Mike and Michelle DeFoe. The DeFoes had been invited by Fr. Tom Graner to speak following Mass. Drawn by a deep love for serving others—especially those living in poverty—she became one of the founding members and the first president of the local SSVdP conference.

Deb was elected President of the Fargo District Council in 2024. Through this ministry, she enjoys the person-to-person home visits and collaborating with many organizations, building partnerships that strengthen and support those in need.

Deb continues her service today as a board member of the Pierce County Food Pantry and through her involvement with Great Plains Food Bank CSFP distributions. Her guiding philosophy is simple yet powerful: Live the Little Way. “Do small things with great love.” Deb remains deeply humbled and grateful to have been nominated for the Caritas Award by Father Frank Miller, viewing the recognition not as a personal honor, but as a reflection of the many faithful people she has been blessed to serve alongside.

Life After Foster Care: Transforming Lives Through Love

If you want to learn more about life after foster care for children in adoption centers, here is a guide with lots of information! Keep reading to learn more.

Aging out of foster care can be an incredibly challenging transition for young adults. Without proper support, many foster children struggle to find stability, education, and a sense of belonging. Adoption centers play a crucial role in providing guidance, resources, and lifelong connections to help these young people thrive.

Understanding the Challenges of Aging Out

Youth leaving foster care face a unique set of challenges that many of their peers never encounter. Suddenly, they are expected to navigate housing, employment, education, and healthcare on their own. The lack of a stable support system can leave these young adults vulnerable to financial hardship, mental health struggles, and social isolation. The statistics highlight the severity of the problem: 20% of youth aging out of the system experience immediate homelessness, demonstrating a significant failure to provide adequate support for their transition into adulthood, according to the America First Policy Institute. This stark reality underscores the importance of intervention and guidance from adoption facilities and community organizations to provide these young people with a safety net during such a critical life stage.

Providing Stable Housing and Safe Environments

One of the most immediate needs for youth transitioning from foster care is stable housing. Without a safe place to live, everything from education to employment becomes difficult to maintain. Adoption facilities often partner with housing programs to secure safe, affordable, and supportive living arrangements for these young adults. By ensuring that youth have a reliable home base, adoption centers help prevent the downward spiral into homelessness and unsafe living conditions.

          Supporting Educational and Career Goals

Education is a critical component of success after foster care. Many youth exit the system without having completed high school or received guidance on postsecondary opportunities. Adoption facilities provide tutoring, mentorship, and scholarship resources to help these young adults pursue higher education and vocational training. Career guidance is equally important. Adoption facilities often connect youth with internships, job training programs, and employment services that prepare them for financial independence.

Fostering Emotional and Mental Health Support

Transitioning out of foster care is not only a practical challenge but also an emotional one. Many youth experience trauma, grief, or loss from time spent in the system, which can impact mental health and relationships. Adoption facilities provide counseling, peer support groups, and access to mental health professionals to address these emotional needs. Therapeutic interventions help youth process their past while developing coping strategies for adulthood. By prioritizing emotional well-being, adoption facilities help young adults cultivate resilience, self-esteem, and healthy interpersonal relationships that are crucial for long-term success.

          Encouraging Strong Social Connections

Loneliness and isolation are common for youth aging out of foster care, as many of them lack a network of family or supportive adults. Adoption centers work to foster connections by pairing youth with mentors, volunteers, and supportive peers who can provide guidance and companionship. Building strong social networks helps youth feel valued and connected. These relationships serve as a safety net in times of need, offering advice, encouragement, and opportunities for personal growth. Social support also contributes to overall mental health and can reduce the risk of homelessness or involvement with the justice system.

Promoting Life Skills and Financial Literacy

Independent living requires more than just a roof over one’s head—it also requires practical skills. Youth aging out of foster care often lack experience with budgeting, cooking, time management, and other daily responsibilities. Adoption facilities provide workshops and mentorship programs that teach essential life skills to support successful adult living. Financial literacy is a key component of these programs. Understanding how to manage income, pay bills, and plan for the future is crucial for avoiding financial instability. By equipping youth with these skills, adoption facilities empower them to navigate adulthood with confidence and independence.

Providing Access to Health Care and Wellness Resources

Healthcare access is another critical factor for youth transitioning from foster care. Regular medical check-ups, mental health support, and preventative care are essential for long-term well-being. Adoption centers often coordinate with medical providers to ensure youth have access to necessary health services, including counseling and wellness programs. This comprehensive approach helps prevent untreated medical conditions, supports mental and physical health, and promotes overall stability. Access to healthcare also ensures that young adults are equipped to manage chronic conditions, injuries, or mental health challenges that could otherwise disrupt education, employment, or independent living.

          Connecting Youth to Community Resources

Beyond direct services, adoption facilities serve as a bridge to community resources that support youth in multiple areas of life. This includes access to housing programs, educational scholarships, job placement services, and legal aid. These connections help fill gaps that youth may encounter when transitioning from foster care. Community partnerships enhance the effectiveness of adoption centers by creating a comprehensive network of support. By linking youth to local programs, organizations, and volunteers, adoption facilities expand the safety net and increase opportunities for stability, growth, and success.

          Promoting Positive Identity and Self-Worth

Foster care experiences can leave youth questioning their identity and value. Adoption facilities provide programs that encourage self-discovery, confidence-building, and personal development. Mentorship, life coaching, and group workshops help youth explore their strengths, set goals, and develop a sense of purpose. Cultivating self-worth is essential for resilience and long-term success. When youth feel valued and supported, they are more likely to pursue education, career opportunities, and healthy relationships, ultimately transforming their lives through love, guidance, and encouragement.

          Ensuring Lifelong Support and Mentorship

Transitioning from foster care does not end once a youth reaches adulthood. Lifelong mentorship and ongoing support are key to preventing setbacks and fostering stability. Adoption centers maintain connections with youth even after they have aged out, offering advice, encouragement, and access to resources as needed. This long-term commitment helps youth navigate the inevitable challenges of adulthood, from career transitions to personal relationships.

Advocating for Policy and Systemic Improvements

In addition to direct services, adoption facilities often advocate for systemic changes to improve outcomes for youth aging out of foster care. They work with policymakers, social workers, and community organizations to ensure that resources, protections, and programs are available to support these vulnerable young adults. Advocacy efforts help address systemic gaps that contribute to homelessness, unemployment, and lack of access to education or healthcare. By promoting policy improvements, adoption facilities aim to create a stronger, more supportive system that transforms the lives of youth long after they leave foster care.

          Celebrating Success and Building Community

Adoption facilities also play a role in celebrating the achievements of youth transitioning from foster care. Graduations, job promotions, or personal milestones are recognized and shared, reinforcing a sense of accomplishment and belonging. This celebration of success builds community and encourages youth to continue striving for their goals. By creating an environment of encouragement and recognition, adoption facilities help young adults envision a positive future and feel empowered to achieve it.

Life after foster care can be full of challenges, but adoption facilities provide the support, guidance, and resources needed for youth to thrive. From housing and education to mentorship and life skills, these organizations transform lives through love and care. By investing in comprehensive support systems, adoption facilities ensure that young adults can transition into independent, successful, and fulfilling lives. If you are looking for reliable

Every act of kindness has a ripple effect—one that stretches far beyond a single moment. This Giving Hearts Day, Catholic Charities North Dakota invites you to celebrate with us as we step back through the decades and honor the timeless power of generosity.

Our theme, “Giving Back Through Time – Kindness Never Goes Out of Style,” reminds us that compassion has always been at the heart of our work and always will be.

A Tradition of Serving North Dakotans for Over 100 Years

For more than a century, CCND has been walking alongside individuals and families during their most vulnerable moments—supporting older adults, individuals with intellectual disabilities, pregnant women, children in foster care, and so many others. Your generosity each year ensures these services not only continue but grow.

          Why Giving Hearts Day Matters

Giving Hearts Day is CCND’s second largest fundraising opportunity of the year and a moment when our entire community comes together to lift up neighbors across North Dakota. Gifts made on this day help fund critical programs—especially those with little outside funding—allowing us to reach people who may be hearing about our mission for the first time.

This year, Dental Flossophy in Bismarck has pledged match dollars, meaning every Giving Hearts Day contribution goes even further to support vulnerable North Dakotans.

While our staff celebrates a fun, decade‑themed spirit week—complete with dress‑up days, nostalgic photos, and staff‑powered social media moments—the heart of this day is deeply rooted in mission.

But Giving Hearts Day isn’t about nostalgia—it's about shaping someone’s future. A warm home. A steady hand. A compassionate advocate. A path forward. Your gift makes these moments possible.

Five Myths About Adopting From Foster Care

Information about adopting children in foster care at Catholic Charities North Dakota.

Myth: Adopting from Foster Care is Too Hard

Each person has their own experiences with the child welfare system, but we can assure you that our Adults Adopting Special Kids Specialists are experts in their field and will partner with you every step of the way. They will help you gain an understanding of the foster care system and the adoption process, all while supporting you through the twists and turns of a child’s journey through foster care and adoption.

Myth: Adopting Younger Children is Easier than Adopting Teens

All children within the foster care system have experienced some level of trauma, regardless of the age they came into care. Teenagers are incredibly resilient and most of them long for a permanent, safe, and loving home. Adoptive parents have a chance to provide a sense of belonging to teens and give them a lifelong commitment that will change the trajectory of their lives.

Myth: There is No Support After Adoption

The North Dakota Post Adopt Network is a service that provides support to families who have
adopted. The Post Adopt Network is a support system that offers a wide array of services and is completely free to you and your family. One extremely important component of any adoption or guardianship is the support network that families have as their child/ren continues to develop.

Myth: I Have to be Foster Care Licensed to Adopt

If a prospective adoptive family is interested in providing temporary care for children in foster care who have experienced trauma and loss, they can certainly become licensed to do so. However, it is not a requirement to be foster care licensed to adopt through the AASK Program. We work with all families throughout the state of North Dakota who are interested in being a forever home to children in need.

          Myth: Adopting is Expensive

The upfront costs of adopting through the AASK Program is less than $500, though this is often reimbursed to families after adoptive placement. Most all children in foster care qualify for adoption assistance. The Adoption Assistance Program was created to help secure and support safe and permanent adoptive families for children with special needs. It is designed to provide adoptive families of any economic level with needed social services, and medical and financial support to care for children in foster care.

          Adopt

ion is a journey filled with hope, love, and complexity. Behind every adoption story are birth parents making difficult decisions, families navigating new dynamics, and children who deserve care and stability. Understanding these layers is essential to appreciating the profound impact adoption has on lives.

Recently, Catholic Charities North Dakota’s Kris Haycraft and Maria Huizenga joined Craig Blumenshine on Prairie Public’s Main Street to shed light on the realities of adoption. Their conversation explored:

          Support for Birth Parents

Birth parents often face emotional and practical challenges during the adoption process. Kris and Maria emphasized the importance of compassionate support systems that honor their role and choices.

          Guidance for Families

Adoption isn’t just a legal process—it’s a lifelong commitment. Families need resources, education, and ongoing guidance to ensure they can provide a nurturing environment for their child.

          Caring for Children

At the heart of adoption is the well-being of children. Catholic Charities North Dakota works tirelessly to ensure every child finds a safe, loving home where they can thrive.

This conversation is more than informative—it’s heartfelt and deeply human. Whether you’re considering adoption, supporting someone who is, or simply want to understand the process better, this discussion offers valuable insights.

Celebrating Connection

Spotlight on Relationships Built Through Service

Service has a remarkable way of bringing people together. Even the smallest acts of service create opportunities for connection that go beyond the task at hand. In serving others, we often discover shared values, mutual respect, and friendships that strengthen the fabric of our communities.

When people come together to serve, differences in age, background, and experience fade into the background. What matters most is the shared goal — to make a positive impact. This shared purpose builds trust and empathy, turning strangers into teammates and teammates into friends. Service becomes a bridge, linking people through compassion and collaboration.

These relationships are often some of the most genuine and lasting. They’re rooted not in convenience or circumstance, but in a commitment to something greater than oneself. Through service, we see each other’s strengths, learn from one another’s stories, and find inspiration in the collective effort to do good. The connections formed this way remind us that everyone has something valuable to give.

Celebrating these connections means recognizing that service is not a one-way act of giving — it’s a reciprocal exchange that enriches everyone involved. The person serving gains a deeper understanding of humanity and purpose, while those being served feel seen, valued, and supported. Together, these moments of kindness weave a network of care that uplifts entire communities.

In a world that can often feel divided, service offers a path toward unity. Each project, each helping hand, and each smile shared in the process reinforces the idea that we are stronger together. By celebrating the relationships built through service, we honor not only the work accomplished but also the human connections that make that work meaningful.

Ultimately, the true legacy of service lies in these connections — the friendships forged, the empathy cultivated, and the enduring sense of belonging that grows from serving side by side. When we celebrate service, we celebrate community, compassion, and the best of what it means to be human.

As I reflect on my work as a social worker in the Pregnancy, Parenting, and Adoption Services program, I am continually drawn back to one powerful moment—the moment when you can physically see the weight lift from a client’s shoulders. Their posture softens, they take a deeper breath than they have in days, and a small but genuine smile appears, often for the first time in a long while. It is in that moment that hope becomes visible.

Women who seek pregnancy-related support often arrive feeling overwhelmed, frightened, confused, and profoundly alone as they try to navigate an unexpected and deeply personal journey. Many are carrying not only the uncertainty of their circumstances but also the emotional burden of believing they must face it all by themselves.

When they sit down with one of our social workers—someone who offers unconditional compassion, nonjudgmental guidance, and clear information about the options ahead—something shifts. The situation begins to feel more manageable. They start to feel empowered again, understanding that the path forward is theirs to shape.

What often makes the greatest difference is the realization that they no longer have to walk this path alone. As they come to trust that we will be beside them through every step, offering support, resources, and a steady presence, their fear gives way to relief. That is when they offer that first, unguarded smile and say, “I feel like I can breathe again.”

In that moment, they understand that whatever decision they ultimately make—whether to parent or to make an adoption plan—it will be respected, supported, and grounded in what feels right for them and their baby. They have hope again and the support needed to accomplish their goals. These are the moments that I cherish, the moments that make a lasting impression for me and for the women I have the privilege to work with.

Being a guardianship worker in the Guardianship Division/Intellectual Disabilities is challenging but also fulfilling. Our guardianship workers are responsible for ensuring that each person on their caseload receives the support and services that will give them the best quality of life possible. Sometimes, this includes accompanying an individual on their final journey in life. In September, Catholic Charities ND was appointed emergency guardian by the court for Anna, an 88-year-old woman with mild intellectual disabilities. She was in the hospital and no longer able to make and communicate decisions. Anna had been living in a nursing home and had no family. She was experiencing significant cardiac and pulmonary issues.

As soon as we were appointed emergency guardian, our guardianship worker went to the hospital and introduced herself to Anna. She also met with her doctors to get a handle on Anna’s medical condition. Our guardianship worker also contacted the nursing home and Anna’s Developmental Disabilities Program Manager to gather more information on Anna’s medical needs as well as some history about Anna’s life and who Anna was as a person and what was important to her.

Because Anna had no family, our guardianship worker visited Anna at the hospital at least twice a day as she was very anxious and lonely. After a few days, it became apparent that aggressive medical treatment was no longer helping Anna. After much thought and discussion with her doctors, our guardianship worker made the difficult decision to put in place a do not resuscitate order if Anna’s heart or breathing stopped. Anna remained in the hospital 10 more days until she peacefully passed away. Our guardianship worker continued to sit with Anna several times each day and comfort her during this time. She was with Anna when she passed away as she did not want her to be alone.

This is just one example of the compassionate and dedicated work of our staff. Anna was a stranger to our guardianship worker when we were appointed guardian by the court and during the last three weeks of her life, our guardianship worker worked tirelessly to provide Anna with quality guardianship services but more importantly, the human connection that Anna needed on her final journey.

The act of service in a job goes beyond completing assigned tasks—it reflects a genuine commitment to contributing to the well-being of others and the success of the organization. It involves approaching work with empathy, integrity, and a willingness to support colleagues, clients, or the community in meaningful ways. Whether through small, everyday gestures of helpfulness or larger efforts that improve systems and outcomes, the act of service demonstrates professionalism and purpose. It is the foundation of a positive workplace culture and a reminder that every role has the power to make a difference.

Within the Adults Adopting Special Kids (AASK) Program and the North Dakota Post Adopt Network, our agency is fortunate to have dedicated staff members who live out this spirit of service each day. It is an honor to share the reasons why these staff members choose to serve at Catholic Charities North Dakota:

I serve because I don't believe we're put on this earth for our happiness only. I believe we are put on earth to help and serve others and to love one another.

           I serve because I know I’m making a difference.

I serve because I believe in the power of family and connection. It is an honor and a privilege walking alongside children and families during some of the most pivotal moments in their lives.

I serve because I love…. “to be there on finalization day. It's such a beautiful moment to be there with the family and to know all that they have gone through and to be a part of the day where they get to just be family and be recognized as family by everyone.”

I serve because children deserve to be heard. I am their advocate and their voice.

I serve because I am driven by the opportunity to be a part of the process in helping make a difference in a child’s life. Helping children find a permanent loving family, and helping a family grow or become complete, is incredibly rewarding and heart filling.

I serve because I love…. “to be there on finalization day. It's such a beautiful moment to be there with the family and to know all that they have gone through and to be a part of the day where they get to just be family and be recognized as family by everyone.”

I serve because I get to support the least, the last, and the lost.

I serve because…. “I enjoy meeting and talking about their lives and helping with supports if needed, but the best part is just really getting to know them.”

I serve because I love being a part of the journey for children and families. It's such a special position to be able to be a part of the process of adoption and build relationships with children and families along the way.

I serve because I want to make a difference in the lives of kids and families in North Dakota and be a support to them. …It brings me joy and is an honor to meet the kids and families we serve and have a small part in their journeys.

I serve to help youth in our community find the loving, supportive families they deserve.

I serve because I am driven by the profound and positive impact our work has on children’s lives, as we help facilitate the creation of stable family units. The opportunity to help children find permanency and a sense of belonging is my primary motivation, and this mission is strengthened by serving alongside a team of equally dedicated professionals.

I serve because it’s a privilege to be a small part of an organization that works to fulfill children’s and families’ dreams of a forever home and lifelong relationships.

I serve because… “I am motivated to continue to provide the best for the children and families I serve to ensure that each child gets a chance for normalcy during the remainder of their childhood. No child should grow up in foster care!”

I serve because I came from a background where my childhood lacked an abundance of sunshine & happiness and I had to grow up way too fast. If I can bring any joy or a happy memory to just one child, my goals will be accomplished.”

In the words of an AASK staff member, “I serve because we are the hands and feet of Jesus.” What a beautiful joy it is to be part of an organization that truly embodies the definition of service. Each day, through compassion, dedication, and commitment, Catholic Charities North Dakota continues to make a lasting difference in the lives of children and families across the state.

Adoption centers play a crucial role in the lives of countless children and families. They are places where children in need of a safe and loving home can find their new families, and where prospective adoptive parents can find the joy and fulfillment they seek. Understanding the function and structure of adoption centers can help demystify the adoption process and highlight the importance of their work. Here are three key things you should know about adoption centers.

  1. Understand the Role of Adoption Centers

Adoption centers are not only repositories for legal paperwork but also crucial advocates for children seeking permanency. They act as intermediaries between birth families, adoptive families, and sometimes the foster care system. Adoption centers are highly dedicated to finding the best match for each child and family, ensuring a stable and loving environment for the transferred child.

The adoption process can vary greatly depending on the center and the child's circumstances. Adopting through an adoption center often involves detailed reviews, home evaluations, and preparing prospective parents through extensive educational programs. It's a thorough process designed to ensure the welfare of the child and the readiness of the adopting family. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as cited by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI), 25% of youth who leave foster care are adopted, showing the significant impact these centers have on securing permanent homes for children.

Adoption centers often face numerous challenges, including funding constraints and the necessity of extensive background checks and evaluations. These centers must navigate complex legal frameworks and consider individual needs meticulously to find the right family for each child. Despite these challenges, the outcome is rewarding as they successfully change lives by forming new familial bonds.

When I hear the word “Christmas” my first thoughts are of family, togetherness, laughter, peace and joy. Sadly, for a number of the people that we serve in our Guardianship Division/Intellectual Disabilities, their first thoughts may be fear, chaos, loneliness, grief or anxiety.

A year ago, over the holidays, the police were called to a homeless shelter because a young woman with intellectual disabilities, Kalani, was dropped off by a couple from out of state. They left her in front of the building and drove off. Kalani only knew their first names, saying that they were new friends she made in a different state. Eventually, it was determined that Kalani had no place to return to so she was connected with a Developmental Disabilities (DD) Program Manager at the Human Service Center.

The DD Program Manager made an emergency referral to our guardianship program as Kalani was not able to give informed consent for services or medical treatment and no family members could be located. We immediately accepted the referral, pending the emergency guardianship court hearing. The court ruled that a guardianship was necessary because Kalani lacked the capacity to fully understand her situation which caused her to be vulnerable and at risk of harm.

Once appointed by the court, our guardianship worker immediately met with Kalani at the homeless shelter. Kalani was very distressed. She was afraid because she did not know what was going to happen to her. She had no money, no clothes, no winter coat and she knew no one in North Dakota. Our guardianship worker worked closely with the DD Program Manager to access a safe residential setting and, within days, she moved into a small group home which specializes in serving people with intellectual disabilities.

Kalani was penniless – between the guardianship worker, group home staff and the DD Program Manager, they were able to obtain new clothes, a winter jacket, basic needs like shampoo, toothpaste, etc. When Kalani moved in, she was very withdrawn, quiet and anxious. She cried often. Day by day, she started to settle in. Everyone also made sure that she received gifts for Christmas!

Kalani began receiving counseling to help address the trauma that she experienced. Fast forward one year – Kalani is thriving! She loves where she lives and she has several close friends. She has a part-time job that she enjoys going to three times a week. With her team’s assistance, she was able to begin receiving social security benefits and North Dakota Medicaid to help pay for her services and medical needs.

Over the past few years, the Adults Adopting Special Kids (AASK) program has been a part of many changes and adjustments, allowing us to create a program full of high quality, efficient adoption procedures for our children and families! As we allow ourselves to practice all that we have implemented, we also appreciate the time when we can pause and reflect on all the moments that create peace in our world of adoption.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of our role is supporting the children who join their adoptive family each year. While many emotions and feelings emerge with adoption, peace is certainly one that is cherished and valued. This past year, AASK helped 245 children finalize their adoption with their forever family!

November is extra special because we get to celebrate National Adoption Month! One initiative we work on year-round but focus heavily on in November, is raising awareness for children who are not yet in their adoptive home. In North Dakota, there are approximately 25-30 children who are waiting for an adoptive family at any given time. This fueled our desire to establish the Red Shoe Campaign! The Red Shoe Campaign was started as a collaborative effort between AASK the local Recruitment and Retention Coalitions in eastern North Dakota to raise awareness to the number of North Dakota children waiting in foster care to be adopted. The campaign is a reference to the Wizard of Oz when Dorothy clicks the heels on her red shoes three times exclaiming ‘there’s no place like home’. It is the campaign’s overarching goal to spread the message that there’s, truly, no place like home and that all children deserve a family to call their own. Take a peek at some of our efforts below!

While it is difficult to fully experience peace knowing children are still waiting for their forever home, we can find comfort in our continuous efforts to bring awareness to the community to learn about all of the brave, kind, and resilient children who need an adoptive home.

We are grateful to have such an important role in a child’s life and are honored to be a small part of their life. We look forward building peaceful moments for children and families in the upcoming year!

Life often feels like a complex, scattered puzzle. Each day, we juggle various pieces: relationships, careers, personal goals, health, and self-growth. Sometimes, these pieces feel mismatched, and we can’t envision how they could ever come together into something whole. But there are moments in life—sometimes hard-won, sometimes unexpected—when things begin to align. In these moments, we experience a sense of peace as if we’ve glimpsed the whole picture.

Peace is something many of us crave, but it often feels out of reach. We may think it’s a feeling that arrives when circumstances are perfect—when life is free of conflicts, responsibilities are manageable, and everything is under control. However, true peace is more about inner alignment than external perfection. The real peace that endures comes when we start to see and understand how the pieces of our lives contribute to a meaningful whole.

Every aspect of our life is part of the journey to personal peace. Yet, some pieces are harder to accept, especially if they don’t fit our initial expectations. Maybe it’s an unexpected pregnancy, maybe it’s a struggle with infertility, or maybe it’s a relationship that is struggling. When we try to control or force pieces into a certain place, we experience stress, and peace feels farther away. True peace, however, often arises when we accept each piece for what it is and trust that it has a purpose, even if we can’t yet see where it fits.

Life’s turning points can feel like magical moments, when suddenly, things begin to make sense. These moments often arrive unexpectedly. Sometimes, we realize that a seemingly insurmountable barrier led us to a new path, or a difficult time taught us resilience. Recognizing these connections between different “pieces” brings a sense of relief and gratitude, and, as a result, peace starts to replace tension.

Being Pregnancy, Parenting, and Adoption Services Social workers gives us a front row seat to watch families put the pieces together, to watch things fall into place and for real peace to settle in during a period in their lives when peace seemed unattainable. It’s the reassurance that everything—even the imperfect pieces—contributes to a meaningful whole.

In the fall of 2020, Kris began hosting Bundle Up Your Baby Bump events. This event started in Fargo and has expanded to Wahpeton, Williston, Minot, and Bismarck. Bundle Up Your Baby Bump is a free shopping event for expectant parents to get the supplies they need for their babies and children. All year long the PPAS program collects gently used baby supplies from parents who no longer need them and then give them away two times a year at our Bundle Up Your Baby Bump events. These events are hosted in the fall and the spring.

Bundle Up Your Baby Bump has been instrumental in giving back to families in need in the Fargo/Moorhead/West Fargo. In the last four years Kris and Catholic Charities North Dakota have helped hundreds of families get what they need to care for their children. The added benefit is that families now know a good place to take used baby supplies where they can make an impact in the community.

Kris’s work at Catholic Charities North Dakota and with the Bundle Up Your Baby Bump event is nothing short of inspiring. The care and compassion that she brings to her work and to her clients is evident every single day. Kris has made Bundle Up Your Baby Bump her passion project and is the reason it has been so successful in helping the community.

A lot of work goes into preparing for Bundle Up Your Baby Bump and Kris goes above and beyond. In the six months that lead up to each event, Kris collects all the donations and then takes the clothes and blankets home to wash and fold them. What she doesn’t do herself, she organizes volunteers to help her. She is often out in the community advocating for her program and advertising Bundle Up Your Baby Bump to reach more families in need. While there are volunteers on the day before the event for set up and on the day of the event, all the work that leads up the event is completed by Kris and her small PPAS team.

Across the wide-open expanses of North Dakota, Catholic Charities North Dakota aims to provide essential guardianship services to vulnerable adults, fostering a sense of security and support within our tight-knit communities. The journey to secure the well-being of incapacitated individuals is often fraught with challenges, yet our dedicated staff are here to provide essential support that fosters peace and stability in the lives of those we serve.

For those in our care—individuals facing cognitive impairments, disabilities, or health crises, the world can feel overwhelming. Navigating complex medical systems, legal matters, finances and daily decisions can be daunting. Our guardian’s step in as compassionate advocates, ensuring that these individuals have a voice in their care and decisions.

The role of a guardian extends beyond just legal representation. It encompasses a deep commitment to understanding the unique needs and preferences of the individual. By building trusting relationships, our guardians create an environment where vulnerable adults feel safe and valued. This connection is vital; it empowers individuals to regain a sense of control over their lives, even in the face of adversity.

One of the most significant ways our guardians provide peace is through regular communication with their clients. They maintain open lines of dialogue with their clients, family members, and healthcare providers. This transparency not only fosters trust but also ensures that all decisions are made collaboratively and with the individual’s best interests in mind. Knowing that someone is consistently looking out for their well-being alleviates stress and anxiety, allowing vulnerable adults to focus on their health and happiness.

Our guardians also play a crucial role in crisis management. When emergencies arise—be it a medical issue, housing concern, or personal crisis—their expertise and proactive approach make a world of difference. They are trained to handle difficult situations with sensitivity and skill, ensuring that their clients receive the necessary support and care. This ability to navigate crises not only protects individuals but also provides peace of mind for families who may feel helpless in challenging times.

Moreover, our guardians are deeply committed to promoting the dignity and autonomy of their clients. They strive to respect individual preferences, ensuring that the personal values and wishes of those they serve are honored. This approach fosters a sense of agency and empowerment, helping vulnerable adults feel that their lives still hold meaning and purpose.

As we reflect on the impact of our guardianship services, it’s clear that the peace of mind we provide is invaluable. Every day, our guardians make a tangible difference in the lives of vulnerable adults, ensuring they are treated with respect and compassion. This commitment to quality care not only enhances the well-being of our clients but also uplifts families who can rest easier knowing their loved ones are in capable hands.

We believe that every vulnerable adult deserves to live with dignity and peace of mind. Our guardians are dedicated to making that a reality. Together, we are helping to foster communities where everyone can thrive.

One of the primary services offered by adoption agencies is comprehensive support and guidance throughout the adoption process. This includes providing detailed information on different types of adoption, helping you understand legal requirements and eligibility criteria, and offering counseling services. From initial inquiry to post-adoption follow-ups, agencies are committed to ensuring a smooth and supportive experience for both adoptive parents and children.

Adoption agencies play a critical role in matching children with prospective adoptive families. According to the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI), the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes that more than 113,000 children in foster care are eligible for adoption and wait, on average, nearly three years for an adoptive family. Agencies work diligently to find the most suitable matches based on the needs and preferences of both the children and adoptive parents, emphasizing stability and long-term success.

An important part of the adoption journey includes the home study and assessment, a thorough evaluation conducted by the adoption agency. This process involves home visits, interviews, background checks, and education sessions. The goal is to ensure that the prospective adoptive home is safe, nurturing, and ready for a new child. Adoption agencies guide families through this critical step, ensuring all legal and procedural requirements are met.
