Adoption Worker Honored for Service!

Please join us in congratulating Nancy Germain, an AASK adoption worker at Catholic Charities North Dakota, who was recently honored for her many years of outstanding dedication and service to children in need! Nancy Germain is an adoption specialist in the Fargo, North Dakota Catholic Charities AASK (Adults Adopting Special Kids) office. She grew up on a farm outside of Galesburg, North Dakota and graduated from high school there. Nancy studied at the University of North Dakota, majoring in social work and pursuing her passion for music on the side as a member of the University of North Dakota Concert Choir all four years of college. After graduating with her social work degree, Nancy performed for a summer singing on the Dakota Queen Riverboat before starting her career in social work.

Nancy’s social work career has spanned thirty-two years, working in the areas of developmental disabilities case management, mental health case management, and children and family services. Since 2003, Nancy has worked as an adoption specialist with the AASK program in Fargo, first with The Village Family Service Center and then, since 2005, with Catholic Charities North Dakota (CCND) under the new collaborative between CCND and PATH. After many years of membership, Nancy served on the Board of Directors for the North Dakota Family Based Services Association for two years as a parent representative and then four years as an elected board member. In 2013, Nancy was honored with the Lifetime Award by that organization.  She continues to attend the conference every year to gain professional knowledge and reconnect or network with other professionals.

Nancy has been involved in the federal Children and Family Services Review as a reviewer, as well as a reviewer for the state Onsite Case Review process. She has been training prospective foster and adoptive parents through the PRIDE training curriculum since January, 2004, but trained foster parents in the early 1990’s, as well, when it was simply called “Regional Foster Parent Training”. Nancy also serves as AASK’s Lead Adoption Worker, and trains new staff through a curriculum she helped create. Nancy supervises student interns and manages a caseload of children and families we well. Nancy is an incredible asset to the program, and her years of expertise has been so valuable for AASK staff.

Nancy has been married to her husband for over twenty-eight years, and they have three adult children including a set of twins.  They are a split MSUM (Minnesota State University Moorhead) and UND (University of North Dakota) household, college-wise! The Germain children have all been active in their artistic pursuits in the past and present, so music, theatre, and creative writing can be found in abundance in this family’s home and lifestyle, which suits them all very well. Nancy has loved attending concerts with her husband and children, from Guns N Roses, to Def Leppard, to Journey, to the Fargo Blues Festival, as well as the many musicals, plays, and improv shows that her children have been involved in over the years.

Nancy’s sixteen years with the AASK program has nothing short of amazing. She has been a part of finding permanency for many, many children and families over the years… she has helped finalize the adoptions of over 250 children in foster care! Nancy would be the first to attest to the fact that there is always more to learn and grow as a social worker and as a person, even after working in the profession for so long. AASK is incredibly blessed to have Nancy as a part of the adoption world and looks forward to working with Nancy for many more years and watching her help children achieve permanent families through adoption!
